Sajek Valley Travel Guide

Sajek Valley: Travel Guide to the Kingdom of Clouds

Sajek Valley is often called the “Kingdom of Clouds” and is one of the most breathtaking destinations in Bangladesh. Located 1,800 feet above sea level in the lush Chittagong Hill Tracts, it offers a surreal experience where you can literally touch the clouds.

What Makes Sajek Special?

Sajek is a place where nature changes its colors three times a day. You might start with a sunny morning, experience a sudden tropical rain, and then find yourself wrapped in a thick blanket of fog or clouds within minutes.

  • Kanglak Hill: The highest point in the valley and the primary attraction. It offers a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and the lush greenery of the Indian border (Lusai Hills).
  • Ruilui Para: This is the heart of the valley where most resorts are located. You can experience the lifestyle of the Lusai and Pankhoa indigenous communities.
  • Sunrise & Sunset: The helipads are the best spots for sunrise. For sunset, find a high-altitude cafe or resort balcony.
  • Stargazing: On clear nights, Sajek offers a spectacular view of the Milky Way, far from the light pollution of the cities.

Best Time to Visit

While Sajek is beautiful year-round, the best time is from July to November. During the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, the “cloud play” is at its peak, and the waterfalls are full of life.

How to Reach Sajek Valley

Sajek is located in Rangamati district, but for geographical reasons, it is much easier to access via Khagrachhari.

Step 1: Reaching Khagrachhari

  • From Dhaka: Multiple bus services (Hanif, St. Martin Hyundai, Ena, Shyamoli) operate daily.
    • AC Bus: BDT 1,000 – 1,600 ($9 – $15 USD)
    • Non-AC Bus: BDT 750 – 850 ($7 – $8 USD)
  • From Chittagong: Frequent buses and microbuses depart from the Oxygen Mor or Kadamtali stations.

Step 2: The Security Escort (Mandatory)

Due to its location in the Hill Tracts, travelers must travel under a Bangladesh Army Escort for safety.

  • Morning Escort: Starts at 9:30 AM from Dighinala.
  • Afternoon Escort: Starts at 2:30 PM from Dighinala.

Note: If you miss the afternoon escort, you cannot enter Sajek until the next morning.

Step 3: Local Transportation

The most popular way to reach the valley is by “Chander Gari” (locally modified open-top Jeeps).

  • Standard Jeep (Capacity 12-15 people): BDT 10,500 – 12,000 for a 2-day round trip.
  • CNG (Auto-rickshaw): BDT 4,000 – 5,000 (Not recommended due to steep hilly terrain).
